Tru is a three-piece gangsta rap group that No Limit mastermind Master P formed with his younger brothers, Silkk and C-Murder. Tru became the most popular act on No Limit with their 1995 debut album, True; it sold over 200,000 copies with little promotion or airplay, and helped establish No Limit as an underground hip-hop force. Tru released its second album, Tru 2 da Game, early in 1997. Shortly afterward, No Limit exploded, making Master P into a superstar. Given his many duties at the label, along with his forays into filmmaking, basketball, and sports management, plus the burgeoning solo careers of Silkk and C-Murder, it wasn't a surprise that it took Tru two years -- an eternity in No Limit time -- to produce its third album, Da Crime Family. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Saigons Story beginnt, wie es das Klischee verlangt - mit einer Gangsta-Biographie.
Geboren Ende der Siebziger in Brooklyn, einem der sozialen Brennpunkte New Yorks, erfährt der junge Brian Daniel Carenard schnell, dass man es auf der Straße zu Geld und (zweifelhaftem) Ruhm bringen kann. Bereits im Alter von elf Jahren dealt er mit Marihuana, schließt sich mit 13 einer Gang an und wird mit 15 wegen versuchten Mordes zu sieben Jahren Gefängnis verurteilt.
Im Knast entdeckt Brian Rap für sich, nennt sich von nun an Saigon und schließt sich einer "Resurrection Study Group" an, was schließlich zu einer Verkürzung seiner Haftzeit führt. Schon nach fünf Jahren kann er das Gefängnis verlassen. Den Traum, mit Musik und Rap sein Geld zu verdienen, verfolgt Saigon nun hartnäckig. Mit dem aus Puerto Rico stammenden Rapper Tru-Life ist schnell ein Partner gefunden, der Kontakte zu einigen New Yorker Studiobetreibern hat. Die beiden nehmen ihre ersten Mixtapes auf, die in der Szene für Aufsehen sorgen. Ein großer Erfolg für Saigon - die HipHop-Szene sieht in ihm den "next big hype".
Auch Just Blaze wird auf Saigon aufmerksam. Der angesagte Produzent verpflichtet den Rapper 2004 für sein eigenes, gerade gegründetes Label Fort Knocks Entertainment, das mit dem Major Atlantic kooperiert. Sai-Giddy und Justin Blaze beginnen mit der Arbeit am Saigon-Debüt "Greatest Story Never Told".
Ironie des Schicksals: Der Titel erweist sich als geradezu prophetisch gewählt. Als Termin für das Release gilt zunächst Mitte 2005... Drei Jahre später liegt allerdings immer noch kein offizielles Album von Saigon vor, der mittlerweile jedoch beständig und weltweit tourt, was den Buzz um ihn und den erwarteten Erstling weiter am Laufen hält. Immer wieder neu angekündigte Veröffentlichungstermine für "Greatest Story Never Told" machen das Album neben "Detox" von Dr. Dre zu dem am längsten verschobenen HipHop-Album des neuen Jahrtausends.
